In the Midst of Thorns

Watercolor, November 2015.

“… I shall sing, sing without ceasing even if I have to gather my roses from the midst of thorns. The longer and sharper the thorns, the sweeter my song will be.” – St. Therese of Lisieux

Because of a talk that my Mom and I had a two weeks ago, I realized that things are much better and sweeter when you’ve worked hard for it, when you’ve gone through the pressure and pain to finish or build something with your family, friends, and colleagues.

How sweeter it is for the player who has a pain in his knee to make the winning shot in a basketball game. How sweeter it is for the student, whose family had financial problems at first, to graduate college. How sweeter it is for a person to go through life’s toughest hardships and grow to be the person God wanted him to be because of enduring them. How sweeter it is for the sinner who went through so many trials in his life to be found in Jesus, forgiven and made new.
